The Surprise Set Up

For Andrew and Kathy, a traditional wedding was never really in the picture, but a simple, intimate celebration with family and close friends always was. Together, they came up with an idea - one that friends would never expect. For months, they were told by Andrew that they were needed for a surprise proposal for Kathy. But secretly, Andrew and Kathy had started planning for… a surprise wedding!!

Central Park Photoshoot

The day started off with a nice, relaxed portrait session at Central Park in Burnaby, under the haze of an orange, smoky sky. From there, it was time to prepare for the reverse surprise! Tents were raised, speakers were checked, drinks, food and the homemade wedding cake were arranged, and all the beautiful DIY decorations were put on display. The backyard was completely reimagined for one day and all that was left was the excitement and anticipation for the moment 8 months in the planning.

Surprise Proposal

Changing into a casual outfit so as to appear less conspicuous, Andrew walked to a nearby rendezvous point where a little more than 100 friends were gathering. Proposal signs were handed out and groups were organized to play off any suspicions they might have. The surprise-proposal-soon-to-be-surprise-wedding was now on!

Meanwhile, back at the house, the bride with family, friends, and helpers behind this surprise wedding waited in secret…

As the friends waiting quietly outside the house to surprise the bride, the bride waited quietly inside to surprise the guests.

SURPRISE!!!! cheers, shock, tears and laughter erupted through the neighbourhood as Kathy walked through the doors. 

It was the moment we had to fight with the excited family members and friends! There were so many cameras rolling during the big reveal.

Backyard Ceremony

After keeping the promise of showing a traditional proposal, it was time for the second part of the big surprise – the backyard wedding ceremony! Changing back into a formal suit, the groom and his bride performed their wedding vows on the back porch in front of their family and friends.
